Crab Cakes Two Ways – With Dill Sauce

Crab Cakes are one of my favorite meals to order out at a restaurant. It’s a healthy meal that is oh so yummy when done the right way. And there is no better way to achieve that than to make these yummy little treats at home.

Over the years I have had my fair share of these crabmeat filled goodies, but the problem I’ve found with most of them is the patties are made up of more filler than actual crab. Sure, I understand that crab can be expensive, but when I’m paying a fair amount of money for the meal, I would expect to get what I’m paying for. A hearty cake filled with crab, as opposed to a plate full of bread that you have to dig through just to find a few morsels of crab.

Many years ago, my husband and I learned that we could make our own at home, for less money than they would cost to eat out. We found one recipe online, ten years ago, and the other is a more modern twist from the Chicken of the Sea brand. The first one included a Dill sauce, my all time favorite. I will include both recipes below so you can determine which one you like best.

Alaskan Crab Cakes:

Alaskan Crab Cakes

This recipe came from Alaska Bob's Alaska Seafood Recipes website, which on a quick Google search no longer exists on the web.

  • 1 egg Slightly Beaten
  • 1 1/4 cup Fresh Breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup Finely Chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Old Bay Seafood Seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp dry mustard
  • 1 pinch red pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt more to taste if needed
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper more to taste if needed
  • 2 Cups flaked crab meat
  • 2 Tbsp butter or margarine
  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil


  • 1. Combine beaten egg, 3/4 cup breadcrumbs, mayo, parsley, Worcestershire sauce, Old Bay Seasoning, mustard and red pepper in medium bowl.
    2. Add salt and pepper to taste.
    3. Gently fold the crab meat into the mixture.
    4. Shape mixture into 6 balls, and then flatten into 3 inch cakes.
    5. Cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour to allow time for the cakes to set.
    6. In a large skillet, heat butter and oil.
    7. Pan fry on medium-high heat, approximately 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown.
    8. Serve with Dill Sauce.

  • 1 Cup (16oz) Chicken of the Sea Crab Meat
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp Prepared mustard I use Dijon Mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1 tsp Old Bay Seafood Seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • 3/4 Cup Panko Breadcrumbs


  • 1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, except for the crab and breadcrumbs
    2. Add Crab to the mixture
    3. Fold breadcrumbs into the mixture gently.
    4. Form into desired sized crabmeat filled cakes (For us, this was a main meal, so the mixture made 4 hearty crab cakes)
    5. Pan fry (we cooked in Olive Oil)
    6. Serve with Dill Sauce, Recipe below.

Dill Sauce:

I have always loved the smell and taste of dill, so, for me, no crab cake recipe is complete without the accompanying Dill Sauce. I choose to use the Lighthouse Farms Freeze Dried Dill instead of traditional dry dill. This recipe is very easy to make, you won’t be disappointed.

Dill Sauce

  • 1/4 Cup Sour Cream
  • 1/4 Cup Mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tsp Dill Weed
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice


  • 1. Combine all ingredients into a bowl.
    2. Stir till blended.
    3. Let chill in the fridge, and serve with crab cake recipe of your choice
